9:55AM - The Alaska Curlies

I have talked to the owners of all four of these over the last six months. Odie and Ponessa are no longer possibilities for certain reasons. Little Bit and Stormy are. If I were to get one of them, there are different pros and cons to each.

Little Bit's pros are that I would be able to ride him on the trail (I dream of ponying Dolly for a while) and he would be a companion to Dolly if my neighbor does let me keep Dolly at their empty barn/pasture. His care needs are pretty standard. He's a gelding and older, which I think will be a good match for Dolly. The only con is that Tim wouldn't be able to ride him (he has a weight resctriction that the current owner doesn't know the reason for -- she was told by the AK Equine Rescue that he had a weight restriction, though). But, the vet and farrier both said that Tim would be fine on Dolly. And Dolly actually responds to him better than she responds to me anyway (he has a more dominant aura with horses).

On the other hand, Stormy is trained and is mid-aged, so he'd probably do just as well with Dolly. I have heard that Stormy's personality is WONDERFUL by both his original owner and his current owner. He'd probably be good to ride, and Tim could ride him too. However, he's a straight-coated Curly so I might be more allergic to him. And he costs an initial $2000 more than Little Bit for me, and he might cost a little bit more to feed just because he's larger. But, he'd probably be better if Tim would ride with me. But if Tim doesn't ride with me, Little Bit might be better. Or if Tim would ride Dolly, that would be fine anyway. So hmm.

So. If I were to get a horse... Decisions...

Update: It turns out that Little Bit has conformation problems and that is why he has a weight limit.

1:14PM - Dolly and Needles

Dolly is a big baby when it comes to the vet. She is so sensitive, and she remembers the vet and tries to avoid her presence. She received vaccines, EIA, etc. the other day. But she was so freaked out. She jumped all around, her eyes were huge and she was snorting like she was going to hyperventilate. It's really dangerous for her, the vet, and myself at that point.

What I Might Consider, based on the following websites:

* I need to buy a syringe for training. Where do you purchase those?? I will desensitize Dolly to the sights, sounds, and locations of syringes.

* I will probably need to have a stranger approach Dolly, to mimic the vet. Dolly is so used to me that she doesn't freak out when *I* hold things, although those same things can be scary in the hands of others.

* Switching vets, since just the sight of my current vet is enough to send Dolly in hysterics, and my vet is too busy to work on desensitizing herself to the horse.

Websites I'm gathering that are on-topic and offer useful tips from both trainers and owners:

4:02PM - Hoof trimming information

I shall compile information on hoof trimming here, although with the first thoughts that came to mind upon reading/watching each link:

Link 1 Seemed very informative. Appreciated the comments about concavity and flaring. I'm not sure I liked the idea of taking off the old frog on the second hoof, since he said the new frog hadn't matured yet. Why not let it mature for longer?

Link 2 I am learning SO MUCH from these videos. This particular one helped me learn more about the bars of the hoof, flares, and low heels.

9:27PM - Gracie

Isn't she pretty? I fell in love with her the first time I saw her in the pound. We'd rescued her back when we rescued Kiwii because she'd been there a month and had only two days left to live. I was very allergic to her, though, so she's been staying with my parents-in-law. One of my coworkers is going to get a cat soon, and so I hope she'll take this one. It would be neat for me to still have some way of finding out how Gracie is from time to time. She's a really friendly, sweet cat who is great with other animals.

3:55PM - To make life worth living

I performed in a musical concert recently, and it went well. A lot of people came up afterward to say thank-you for playing (it was a free concert for the holidays). One elderly gentleman in particular expressed the most heart-felt thank-you I've ever heard. He said that during our concert, he realized that there was still beauty in the world, and that life was worth living after all.
